💛 Beloved — From Matthew 6 to the Beloved Son

1️⃣ You — Beloved (Matthew 6:25–32)
Jesus names what is more valuable than food and clothing — life and body — then asks whether the Father who gives the greater will withhold the lesser.
Matthew 6:25
Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
Matthew 6:26
Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?
Matthew 6:27
Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?
Matthew 6:28
And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:

And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

2️⃣ David — Beloved by Name
The Hebrew name David means beloved. Every time his name was spoken, identity was rehearsed.
1 Samuel 17:45
Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.
Daniel 10:11
And he said unto me, O Daniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak unto thee, and stand upright: for unto thee am I now sent. And when he had spoken this word unto me, I stood trembling.
Key points
- Name David = “beloved” — heard every time spoken.
- Boldness vs. Goliath came from belovedness, not skill alone.
- Daniel parallel: “greatly beloved” → strength, boldness.
- Beloved → confidence → worship → leadership → exploits.
- Blessed because loved — not loved because blessed.
3️⃣ Jesus — The Beloved Son
At the Jordan, before public ministry, the Father speaks identity. In the wilderness, Satan drops the word “beloved” — inviting proof through performance rather than rest in sonship.
Matthew 3:17
And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
Matthew 4:3
And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
Matthew 4:6
And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

- “Beloved” spoken before any ministry or miracle.
- Satan’s temptation drops the word “beloved”.
- Identity settled first → temptation resisted from rest, not proof.

4️⃣ John — The Beloved Disciple
John rarely names himself. He calls himself “the disciple whom Jesus loved.”
John 13:23
Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.
John 21:20
Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?
Key points
- Never names himself — “the disciple whom Jesus loved.”
- Identity in nearness to Jesus, not name or rank.
- Leaning on Jesus’ chest (13:23) echoes Jesus in the Father’s bosom (John 1:18).
- Belovedness can be the very thing a person is known by.
5️⃣ Abraham — The LORD Will Provide
On Moriah, Abraham said “God will provide himself a lamb.” The ram was already caught in the thicket — provision trusted before it was seen.
Genesis 22:8
And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.
Genesis 22:13
And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.
2 Peter 1:2
Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
Key points
- Abraham trusted provision before he saw the ram (22:8).
- The substitute was already there, waiting to be seen.
- Provision is often unseen until the moment of need, not absent before it.
- Grace and peace multiply through knowing God (2 Pet. 1:2) — knowledge, not striving.
